SNAP at the Market

I'm really interested in how states are making farmers markets more accessible to low-income shoppers. I've been really excited to see the progress of the "double up food bucks" programs in several states, where people that use their SNAP benefits (formerly food stamps), get twice the value of their benefits if they use it at farmers markets (so $20 in benefits would buy $40 worth of produce). This is an article from Slow Food that gives a brief summary of what a few states are doing.

$5 for a glass of tap water as owner cries pour

We recently dined at the Red Rooster Harlem, which is also doing their own sparkling water (and I believe filtering their still). I would probably pay the $5 Marque charges for their filtered water, because I like to keep things as local as possible. Would you?

Genes tweaked, cows will now give ‘human milk’ - Times Of India

Why is this necessary? That's a serious question, I'm not trying to be negative. I'd actually like to know why someone decided that a cow needs to give a milk that is similar to human milk, rather than cow milk.

Happy Meal toy ban prompts ban on bans in other states : City Insider

Ok. This is crazy. Happy Meals aren't good for kids - they just aren't. Therefore, we should not advertise to the kids by having a toy in the Happy Meal. Yes, I grew up with Happy Meal toys and I liked them, but that doesn't mean we should continue the practice. Now some states are trying to stop bans on Happy Meal toys...so they're banning toy bans. It's ridiculous.

Just sayin'.

Food pyramid: USDA sued by doctors' group that wants vegetarian alternative - latimes.com

An interesting article about the USDA being sued because of the Food Pyramid. While I do think the pyramid has its issues, I don't know that suing the USDA is the right course of action.
